Tensions ran high at Cochise Elementary on Wednesday evening as residents gathered for a community meeting regarding a massive proposed data center in rural Cochise County. Hosted by SpaceX, the presentation outlined an ambitious plan to develop roughly 747 acres near the Apache Generating Station along U.S. Highway 191. If approved, the site would house nine separate buildings dedicated to artificial intelligence operations, marking one of the most energy intensive developments ever proposed in the United States.
The sheer scale of the project is what has many locals talking, specifically a power requirement that could reach six gigawatts at full capacity. While proponents like resident Herald Satterlee argue that embracing AI infrastructure is essential for moving into the future, others remain deeply skeptical. Some attendees voiced fears over how such a colossal facility would affect local wildlife, noise pollution, and precious water resources in the arid region. To mitigate these worries, developers have suggested using a dry cooling system designed to minimize water consumption.
Adding to the confusion is a layer of corporate mystery surrounding the filing process. Although SpaceX led the public outreach efforts, the official special use application was submitted under the name Tombstone Resources LLC, leaving the precise legal relationship between the two entities unclear. Despite requests for interviews during the event, representatives from SpaceX were unavailable for comment to clarify these ties or provide further specifics on the operation’s timeline.
Local officials are attempting to balance these conflicting emotions as they move toward a final determination. Jason Bowling, CEO of Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative, noted that both the excitement and the anxiety felt by citizens are entirely valid responses to a project of this magnitude. For now, no decision has been reached on whether the desert landscape will be transformed into an AI hub. The Cochise County Planning and Zoning Commission is expected to hold a formal public hearing on December 9 to weigh all evidence before making their call.
